CODA – round up!

So our final year exhibition has come and gone, and it went well if I say so myself. It was a stressful week as we were being assessed and as well I had all the final little bits for the exhibition to do, like finding some sort of marquee, getting everything set up in time on the day, finding a dress, etc the list goes on.

Our project broke the week of assesments. Once it got moved from our studio to the gallery space, I don’t know what went wrong but we could only get palm blobs and not finger tips, then the second day of assesments, our fragile infra red LEDs broke. Stress all around!

We rigged it up to work off shadows, to some effect for the exhibition, but I can tell you, it working perfectly would have been far nicer.

It was great to see the final pieces, unlike most other semesters we had no class presentations, so didn’t have a clue what some people were doing! Also the Design students work was really great, some talented designers there.

Anyway here are some shots from the night, the ones with people in it are © Julie Healy everything else is from my Nexus!

If anyone wants to take a closer look at multimedia or visual communication, you can get more info here and here.

See more on the students at the CODA website

Tapas on the night were provided by the wonderful folks at Sober Lane

Hometown History

So I took on this assignment from Scott Thomas and did a little reasearch on my local area and was surprised what I found out. I chose to look at the history of Castlemartyr (I technically live in the hinter lands of the town). I’ve only lived there just over a year and it was interesting to look at the history. If you drive around the local areas apparently you can find evidence all the ways back to the bronze age.

I decided to chose something a little later than that. In 1920 the local members of the IRA decided to take over the RIC ( Royal Irish Constabulary, a British set up police force) barracks and also that same year a man named Liam Heffernan was shot dead on the main street. He was an IRA member. I chose these because I’m a Heffernan and there was a statue, so eventually I researched why there was a memorial to him. You can find more about the history here and here

You’ll have to excuse my pictures I had to use my phone, my SLR battery was dead, I forgot to turn the socket on while charging!! :(

The pictures are the barracks, the bridge where Liam Heffernan was killed, the pub where his friends were conducting business, a shot of the street now.

Interestingly the town looks very similar to what it did back in 1920. Just a few extra cars!

Sample-Studios

Recently I joined an artist group Sample-Studios. They are a newly established and very active artist group.  They have taken over a floor of the Old Government Buildings on Sullivans Quay. It has been exciting to see the empty space develop into fully functional studios a “mecca for leading artists” to quote the Evening Echo.

Check them out on Facebook and Behance.

Kiera and myself took a studio so we had somewhere we could go and build our final year project with as little lugging around a bus stop as possible. We’ve got a pretty comfy set up going I think, I’m a bit biased.

reach out and touch me…

As part of my final year project myself and my project partner Kiera are trying to create a Rear DI touchscreen, eventually I’m getting around to posting on our project blog. If you want to see the progress and (eventually) see the final results you can here

It’s been an interesting but very challenging build. And it is far from finished. At the moment we are coding using flash and it has been quiet painful, but we are getting there.

The following we some of the extremely useful tutorials and forums for building your own multitouch:

Environmental Lights who do some great infrared strips etc have a great buying guide with some tutorials thrown in for good measure

The NUI Group (Natural User Interface Group) have loads of tutorails open source programs and software, and if you have a question you can generally get a great answer here.

This guy Seth Sandler had some great stuff on his blog too. (he’s part of the NUI community)

Negative Space

Saw this on the archives of Creative Review today while doing a little illustration research. Pretty nice illustrations using negative space from a guy called Noma Bar

You can see more of his work here in the CR article
